A panel of professional psychologists and counselors will discuss the psychological implications of the art exhibit, PostSecret, on Wed., Jan. 12, 2011, starting at 6:30pm, at the Spartanburg Art Museum in the Chapman Cultural Center in Spartanburg, SC. The public is invited to see the exhibit and attend the panel discussion free of charge. Doors open at 6pm. Normal exhibit prices are adults $4; students $2.50; and seniors $3.
PostSecret is an extensive exhibit of postcards, each bearing an anonymous and personal secret, as well being artistically enhanced. More than 500,000 postcards have been gathered in recent years in the social phenomenon that spans the globe. There are more than 400 postcards in the Spartanburg exhibit. PostSecret has earned an international reputation for focusing attention on such social issues as child abuse, sexual abuse, suicide, murder, loveless marriages, and other similar topics. However, not all of the postcards explore dark issues: some are funny, witty, clever, and insightful.
“This is often one of those jaw-dropping exhibits,” Karl Hollander, Executive Director of the Spartanburg Art Museum, said. “People just can’t believe what they’re seeing and reading. Almost always when people start talking about these postcards, they start delving into the psychological underpinnings. What prompts people to reveal such highly personal and sometimes dark secrets? This panel of mental health professionals will attempt to address that question.”
On the discussion panel are G. David Heatherly, Ph.D.; Susan A. Bennett, D. Min.; and Caleb Loring, Psy. D. The therapists will begin their public discussion at 6:30pm, after giving the people about 30 minutes to see the exhibit.
