McKissick Museum at the University of South Carolina in Columbia, SC, Receives State Award at Museum Conference

From Mar. 7-9, 2012, McKissick Museum staff and graduate students attended the annual conference of the South Carolina Federation of Museums in Georgetown, SC. SCFM is the state’s professional development and advocacy organization, of which McKissick is an institutional member.

This year McKissick was honored with the Award of Achievement from SCFM for its 2011 exhibition, “Imaging the Invisible,” which highlighted research from the USC NanoCenter; the Department of Art; the A.C. Moore Herbarium; McKissick Museum and the School of Library and Information Science; and the South Carolina Institute of Anthropology and Archaeology and Members of the Maritime Research Division. The Award of Achievement is given to institutions demonstrating excellent utilization of available resources for an exhibition, program, or publication. Faculty Curator Dr. Lana Burgess accepted the award, presented by McKissick’s Chief Curator of Collections and SCFM Past President Jill Koverman, and McKissick’s Natural Science Project Manager and SCFM President (now Past President) Christian Cicimurri.

In addition, McKissick attendees represented the Museum well by organizing and presenting in a diverse slate of sessions. Curatorial Assistant Melanie Neil presented her experience digitizing Museum collections; graduate students Sarah Conlon, Caitlin Podas, and Tara Babb showcased their completion of a Museum Assessment Program grant as part of their coursework; Lana Burgess and graduate student JoAnn Zeise presented curatorial research papers on upcoming museum exhibitions; and Jill Koverman and Melanie Neil sat on a panel discussion about the changing nature of collections-related careers.

Following the conference’s business meeting, two McKissick staffers continued holding offices on SCFM’s Executive Committee (Christian Cicimurri as the organization’s Past President, and Melanie Neil as its Information Technology Officer), and graduate student Caroline Vereen was elected to SCFM’s Professional Development Committee.
