Rachel Parker will participate in Saluda Shoals Park’s “Unearth 2010” on Oct. 3, 2010, in Columbia, SC, and the Lexington Interfaith Community Services Fundraiser “Art in the Garden” on Oct. 8, 2010, at Wingards Nursery in Lexington, SC.
Parker will be one of over sixty artists, musicians, and performing groups to present their work at Saluda Shoals Park’s “Unearth”, a four day celebration of naturally inspired art. The first three days, Sept. 20 – Oct. 2, 2010, artist Mike Williams will complete his art installation of fish sculptures. On Sunday, Oct. 3, from 1-5pm, artists will demonstrate their techniques to the public, and some will allow visitors to try their own hand at creating. Mediums will include everything from photography and sculpture, to basket-making and gourd art.
Parker will paint ‘en plein aire’, a fancy way of saying ‘to paint outdoors’. This once revolutionary approach began in 19th century Europe by painters John Constable and Gustave Courbet. Monet, Cezanne, and Manet were a few of those who perfected it. It’s the perfect approach to feature for a celebration of the outdoors through art!
Unearth will conclude with a concert by the Lake Murray Symphony. Remember to bring blankets and chairs; there will be several performances including dance, music, drumming, acting, and more. A $5 parking fee will be charged.
To help raise money for a good cause, Parker, along with several other local artists, will sell her art at the Lexington Interfaith Community Services Fundraiser “Art in the Garden”. The show will feature tremendous artwork as well as live entertainment by Beatles impersonation band “The Return”.
Wingards Nursery in Lexington, SC, will host this annual benefit art show on Oct. 8, 2010. The event begins at 7pm, and tickets are $35 and on sale now at Wingard’s Nursery. The event normally sells out and tickets will not be sold the day of the show. Ticket price includes a delicious dinner prepared by Dupre Catering, beverages from Sam’s Fine Wines & Spirits, art from the works of leading local artists, a silent auction, and a two hour concert by the world’s greatest Beatles Tribute Band, The Return, which begins at 8pm. Also, Sharon R. Paeth will be available to sign copies of her new book Lexington.
Tony Clyburn, of B106.7, will emcee the evening. All proceeds from the evening benefit LICS.
Rachel Parker is a self taught artist who works mainly in watercolors. As the daughter of artist Gretchen Parker, she was raised going to art lessons and watching her mother paint. She has been drawing since she was old enough to hold a pencil, and began painting in 2000.
Parker’s motivation for creating is to capture what may otherwise go unnoticed, to reveal the beauty in simple moments and objects. Making an image come alive on the paper is her inspiration. She has sold her work nationally and internationally through (www.rachelsstudio.com). Recently, her work was juried into the Atlanta Equestrian Exhibition and was featured on the cover of national magazine Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association. She paints at night and during weekends and works full time as a school social worker.
Parker maintains a blog and enjoys interacting with her patrons on a daily basis. She often has contests on her site for people to have a chance at winning free prints or a painting of their pet. Visit her blog at (www.rachelsstudio.blogspot.com) to participate!
