The Crooked Creek Art League (CCAL) is pleased to announce that Kathy Caudill of Rock Hill, SC, will present the monthly program on Monday, February 18, 2013, at Crooked Creek Park in Chapin, SC.
Several of our members noticed her outstanding work, which won best of show at this year’s South Carolina Watermedia Society show held at City Art in Columbia. Caudill informed us that she made a presentation to CCAL about ten years ago. Her work has changed and improved, and our membership has changed and grown. For many of us, it will be a first show. A third generation self-taught artist, Kathy Caudill began her artistic career in the commercial art field doing freelance work for advertising agencies and corporate clients. She designed the official seal for Raleigh County, West Virginia, in 1980. She also worked for a time as a courtroom sketch artist. In 1980 Caudill switched to full-time painting.
Her subject matter comes from the ordinary people, places, and things that have special meaning to her. She is much more concerned with capturing the emotion or feeling in a piece than in rendering a skillfully painted image.
Caudill has won numerous awards for her work including top merit awards with both the South Carolina and West Virginia Watercolor Societies. She was awarded Best of Show in 2012 and 2010 in the South Carolina Watermedia Society 35th and 33rd Annual Exhibitions and was featured in the article, “The Year’s Best Paintings”, in the February 2011 edition of “Watercolor Artist Magazine”. She will also be featured in the upcoming February 2013 edition of “Watercolor Artist Magazine” as well. Caudill was awarded the Dr. PH Martin- Salis International Award #3 in the Southern Watercolor Society 35th Annual Exhibition in 2012. She has also won first and second place awards in “North Light Magazine’s” cover competitions and was selected as cover artist for the South Carolina Art and Agriculture Calendar in 2001. Her work was also selected for the “Artist’s Magazine’s” 2005 Limited Edition Art Calendar. She was featured in the book, “Splash 8: Watercolor Discoveries”, and the “Artist’s Magazine” in 2004, and her studio was featured in “American Artist Studios Magazine” in 2009.
Caudill was invited to exhibit her work at the Vero Beach Museum of Art in Vero Beach, FL, from October 1, 2011, through January 15, 2012. The exhibition titled, “In the Tradition of Wyeth—Contemporary Watercolor Masters”, was built around two Andrew Wyeth paintings from the museum’s permanent collection and three additional Wyeth paintings from private collections. The remaining paintings in the show featured Caudill’s work and the work of nine other contemporary watercolorists selected from around the country including Stephen Scott Young, Ray Ellis, Dean Mitchell, Hubert Shuptrine, and Alan Shuptrine.
Caudill is the author of “Landscapes in Watercolor,” Walter Foster Publishing, Laguna Hills, CA, and has published several limited edition prints of her paintings. Her work has appeared in numerous publications including “Wonderful West Virginia Magazine”, “Creative Loafing Magazine”, “YC Magazine”, and on the covers of three Dick Blick art catalogs. Her credits also include three murals painted for the US Postal Service and NBC Television. Her work is widely collected both nationally and internationally, and is included in the collections of actor James Earl Jones, Union Carbide, CSX Corporation, and Bank of America to name a few. Caudill has served as juror in numerous art competitions as well as teaching local and regional painting classes and workshops for twenty-five years.
Caudill is a signature member of the West Virginia Watercolor Society and Member with Excellence of the South Carolina Watermedia Society. She is also a member of the Southern Watercolor Society and Allied Artists of America. Kathy is currently represented by the Providence Gallery in Charlotte, North Carolina.
CCAL meets the 3rd Monday of the month at Crooked Creek Park, 1098 Old Lexington Highway in Chapin, SC. Meetings start at 6:30pm with light foods, followed by the program. Visitors interested in the arts are welcome. We ask members to bring a potential member interested in the arts.
