Preservation Society of Chapel Hill (NC) Host Auction to Save Sea Turtles Mural – Dec. 2, 2010

November 17, 2010

The Preservation Society of Chapel Hill is teaming up with the Framer’s Market and Gallery, The Chapel Hill Downtown Partnership and local merchants to raise money to restore The Sea Turtles mural, first painted in 1993 by Michael Brown, located at the corner of Columbia and Rosemary Streets in Chapel Hill, NC.

This 30′ x 70′ mural has a lower and upper portion which differ greatly in restoration needed. The upper portion with the turtles has significant fading but it is otherwise in relatively good condition. It needs repainting to restore its former luster and a protective clear coating to slow future fading. The lower section is in poor condition and suffers from fading and peeling which is the result of lime leaching from the mortar. Repair of this section would include a pressure wash to remove flaking paint and a complete cleaning. Afterwards the area would be repaired and cleat coat added.

Please join us Thursday, Dec. 2, 2010, from 7 – 9pm at the Horace Williams House for a silent auction and an evening of Turtle-themed desserts, coffee and wine. A sample of the silent auction items include pearl earrings donated by J. Mason Jeweler, pillows from the Better Sleep Store, sketches of murals by Michael Brown, a certificate for a party of ten from Bailey’s Sports Grill and many more. Start your holiday shopping Dec. 2, 2010, at the Horace Williams House.

All proceeds from the silent auction will go to benefit the Painted Walls Project to preserve and restore The Sea Turtles mural on Columbia Street – so join us to help Save Our Turtles!

The Painted Walls Projects is a community effort to restore and preserve Chapel Hill’s unique downtown murals.

Many of our wonderful murals are in need of repair and restoration.

The Preservation Society of Chapel Hill is located in the Horace Williams House at 610 East Rosemary Street in Chapel Hill.
