Who says a squirrel has to be gray or shells have to be white?  Start with some water, add lots of color, move it around, spray more water and let dry. Then, add a few details and “VOILA” a colorful animal emerges and what fun! Watch as Burns shows you how to create wonderful and whimsical paintings that you will enjoy. This is one demo that you don’t want to miss. No matter what your medium you can create a fantastic piece of art.

Burns, a graduate of Christopher Newport University with a degree in Fine Arts, has exhibited with the Silver Brush Society, Charlotte Artists Society, Matthews Artists Guild, the Guild of Charlotte Artists, and Nancy Couick Studios and Gallery in Charlotte.  She is described as a contemporary still life painter whose works reflect her love of still life subjects plus crystal and glass and how it diffuses the light and shadows.

Matthews Artists Guild in Matthews, NC, Presents a Demonstration by Mark Stephenson at Monthly Meeting – Apr. 12, 2016

March 28, 2016

Matthews-Artists-Guild-logo

The Matthews Artists Guild in Matthews, NC, will present a demonstration entitled, “Painting Like a Sculptor Thinks”, during its monthly meeting on Apr. 12, 2016, at 6:30pm.

A sculptor begins with the largest of masses and shapes, unconcerned with the ‘likeness” of his subject, and so it can be when you paint! Sargent and Cezanne both used color – and not line – to indicate form. These large masses and tones are the foundation of the subject’s recognizable characteristic. It is by refining these masses that other features will begin to appear and in their proper place. The solid shape growing out of and into the background.

In this demonstration, Stephenson will begin painting a head by laying in masses of color and discussing throughout how he looks for the changes in surface planes and shapes, just as a sculptor looks at his subject and indicating these with color and value such that the head begins to appear.

The next meeting of MAG will be held on Tuesday, April 12, 2016, at 6:30pm in the McDowell Arts Center (MAC) at 123 E. McDowell St. in Matthews, NC.
