National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) Chairman Jane Chu announced on December 2nd that The Center for Craft, Creativity & Design (CCCD) is one of 919 nonprofit organizations nationwide to receive an NEA Art Works grant. CCCD is recommended for a $10,000 grant to support Spaces of Production.

Spaces of Production is a Summer 2015 program consisting of a series of three, short-term residencies where diverse and established artists are invited to use CCCD’s gallery, located in Asheville, NC, to create and execute a new art project.

By extending the studio, a space of material construction, into the city, a space of cultural consumption, Spaces of Production intends to spark conversation about cultural production – raising the question of who, how, and where societal values are created.

NEA Chairman Jane Chu said, “I’m pleased to be able to share the news of our support through Art Works including the award to CCCD. The arts foster value, connection, creativity and innovation for the American people and these recommended grants demonstrate those attributes and affirm that the arts are part of our everyday lives.”

Stephanie Moore, CCCD’s Executive Director said, “CCCD is grateful for the NEA’s support which is critical in executing projects that would not otherwise happen. CCCD is at the forefront of investigating contemporary and innovative craft practices. The
Spaces of Production series will invite our community into this dialogue and encourage participation.”

Art Works grants support the creation of art, public engagement with art, lifelong learning in the arts, and enhancement of the livability of communities through the arts. The NEA received 1,474 eligible applications under the Art Works category, requesting more than $75 million in funding. Of those applications, 919 are recommended for grants for a total of $26.6 million.

Established in 1996, The Center for Craft, Creativity & Design (CCCD) is a national nonprofit organization that advances the understanding of craft by encouraging and supporting research, critical dialogue, and professional development in the United States. CCCD raises funds for programs and outreach to international, national, and regional artists, craft organizations, universities/colleges, and the community. Each year, CCCD administers over a quarter million dollars in grants to those working in the craft field. At the end of January 2014, CCCD relocated to Asheville, NC, and opened Benchspace, a public gallery and workshop for investigating contemporary practices of making in the shifting creative landscape of the 21st century.
