Author and Dessert Designer Caitlin Freeman Lecture and Demo – Friday Jan. 23 | Happy hour at 6pm | Lecture at 6:30pm followed by cake demonstration and tasting. A self-taught baker, Caitlin Freeman is the resident pastry chef for Blue Bottle Coffee. A former owner of the San Francisco cake and sweets shop Miette, Caitlin made a name for herself creating simple and lovely cakes and cupcakes using local and organic ingredients. Inspired to bake by the confectionery paintings of California painter Wayne Thiebaud, she saw her chance to re-create those very cakes when Blue Bottle opened a café in the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. Four years and many art-inspired desserts later, she wrote the book, Modern Art Desserts, to chronicle the desserts, inspiration, and adventures that happened when combining art and cake. $15 / $12 for members / $5 for students. Admission includes cake!

FAAAC presents a lecture with curator Victoria Cooke: African-American Art at the CMA – Thursday, Jan. 29| 6-8pm – Get a sneak peek of two exciting exhibitions of African-American art premiering at the CMA in the spring of 2016. Organized by the Columbia Museum of Art, “REMIX: Themes & Variations in African-American Art” is a groundbreaking exhibition that includes a wide variety of work from the paintings of Hale Woodruff and Charles White to the contemporary sculptures of Willie Cole and Renée Stout and the paintings of Fahamu Pecou and Mickalene Thomas. “REMIX” highlights the practice among many African-American artists of retelling historical themes and stories in new ways and from their own unique perspective. The second exhibition runs concurrently with “REMIX” and features modern and contemporary work from the CMA’s own collection of African-American art. With works by artists as diverse as Romare Bearden and Alison Saar, the CMA has built a collection for education and enrichment of the community and all who visit our institution. FAAAC members only. Free.

Free days are sponsored by BlueCross BlueShield of South Carolina.

The Columbia Museum of Art is located at 1515 Main Street in downtown Columbia, SC
