Youth Art Month Banner Project on Display in York County, SC

The downtown streets of Rock Hill, Fort Mill, Tega Cay, York and Clover, in SC, are lined with student designs for the Arts Council of York County Banner Project.  This project creates colorful lamppost banners, designed and painted by York County students, highlighting the imaginations and creativity of the youth across York County. These banners are displayed as public art in the 5 downtown areas of the cities within York County, SC. This year, 240 designs were submitted by 24 schools. Of those 240 designs, 96 were selected, resulting in 48 banners.

In its 8th year, the Banner Project remains an important program that instills pride in community, and highlights the importance of public art.  This project impacts more than 500 students from all over the county with the creation of the designs that are submitted to Arts Council. Once approved, the designs are transformed onto the banners and painted by students. This year’s theme is “Civil Rights.”  The banners will be on display from February 21 through March 13, 2015.

The Arts Council, York County’s school districts and city governments recognize the value of public art for student engagement. This project is a great example of bringing new ideas from the classroom to the community, stimulating communities and preparing youth for tomorrow’s challenges. A study conducted by Americans for the Arts states that “young people who participate regularly in the arts, three hours a day on three days each week through one full year, are four times more likely to be recognized for academic achievement, to participate in a math and science fair or to win an award for writing an essay or poem than children who do not participate.”

Ashley Beard, an art teacher at South Pointe High School, worked with The Palmetto School at the Children’s Attention Home to paint large banners to hang in the windows of the Center for the Arts located in Old Town Rock Hill.
