Anastasia and Friends in Columbia, SC, Offers “Elements of Art” for First Thursday on Main – Aug. 6, 2015

Anastasia & Friends in Columbia, SC, will present “Elements of Art” featuring works by Page Morris, John Allen, David West and Richard Lund, hosted by Bohumila Augustinova and John Allen, on view from Aug. 6 – 28, 2015. A reception will be held on Aug. 6, from 6-9pm, during Columbia’s First Thursday on Main event. This exhibition is a mixture of photography, paintings, prints, and sculpture.

Work by Page Morris

Page Morris has been painting and creating since third grade. Her use of color, expressive brush strokes, and quirky subject material invites the viewer to see everyday objects in a whole new way.

The current body of work by Richard Lund for this show consists of sculptures made of clay, wire, wood, and other found material. The sculptures are a series of work called “Spirit Horses”.

“Each sculpture represents a protector to nature,” says Lund. “I like to think it would be nice to have a spirit that would protect all the air or water or the trees. Each sculpture takes several months to complete, so I can only make a few each year. Two years in a row my, Spirit Horses were selected to be included in ArtFields© in Lake City, SC.”

Work by Richard Lund

John Allen is a multimedia developer and professional photographer. One of Allen’s works was displayed at ArtFields© last year in Lake City while others have ranked highly in international photo competitions.

“I’ve always had a passion for historical subjects, browsing encyclopedias, books and studying pictures,” says Allen. “The first mosaic I attempted was one of Martin Luther King comprised of hundreds of photographs of people. As time went by, I began experimenting with the process more and created one called, ‘Georgie,’ based on the first US President, using thousands of stock images. ‘Georgie’ was well received last year, and on the suggestion from Marvin Chernoff, I decided to do the rest of the presidential mosaics in a similar manner.”

David West has a BFA in Studio Art / Painting from the University of North Florida and an MAT in Art Education from the University of South Carolina. He lives in the Rosewood area of Columbia and teaches Visual Arts Foundations and Photography at White Knoll High School in Lexington, SC. Prior to teaching, he spent 13 years as a professional graphic designer.

A jack-of-all-arts, West enjoys exploring a variety of 2D artforms including drawing, painting, printmaking, graphic design and photography. He prefers to work from either life or imagination and totally geeks out on process.
