FABULON, A Center For Art and Education in Charleston, SC, Calls for Entries for “Not Your Typical Love Story” – Deadline Dec. 12, 2017

November 13, 2017

With the bells of the New Year still echoing in our ears, we will be confronted with hearts, candy, and the trappings of modern day Valentine’s Day.

Each year at this time we put out a call for our “Not Your Typical Love Story Show”. It started as a quest to battle commercialism, materialism, over consumption and narrow-minded views. We had the idea to show art that illustrated the many facets of love, a truer vision of Saint Valentine’s mission, and spread some empathy.

With so much news of injustice, incivility, instability, and insecurity, it is hard to imagine thoughts of love. Or that love could be a remedy. We thought of cancelling the show.

But that song by Hal David and Burt Bacharach keeps echoing. Maybe you remember the Jackie DeShannon version or prefer Dionne Warwick’s, or Boss Baby is your frame of reference with Missi Hale singing away.

“What the world needs now is love, sweet love

it’s the only thing there’s just too little of

no, not just for some, but for everyone”

That says it all!

And it says hold on to that thought. Make it real.

Send us images that prove that loving your neighbor like yourself could really make a difference in the world. Show that love trumps hate every time. Inspire more people to realize that they can make a difference.

The song is apparently a conversation addressing the Lord. But this is a plea to all humans of any denomination, spiritual belief, struggling person even those brave enough to question, and daring enough to lift voices and pencils and paint brushes.

The lyrics go on to say “we don’t need another mountain”….but with our environment at risk and the EPA under attack, lest we not forget that ordering up another mountain isn’t really an option. So if we love it, we need to show it!

We are seeking deep connections to the idea that love will save the world. As cliché as that may seem, prove it could be true. Dig deep. Please no cliché images. Capture examples but also show some potential solutions.

For info to enter visit (https://www.callforentry.org/festivals_unique_info.php?ID=4861).

Please include an artist’s statement.

All mediums 2D and 3D visual arts will be considered.

All work must be for sale. The gallery receives 40% of the sale. Artist is responsible for delivery and pick up of artwork. Fabulon, a Center for Art and Education in Charleston, SC, Calls for Entries for “TRIBUTE” – Deadline Aug. 21, 2017

July 31, 2017

So many tragic losses of great musicians in the most recent years. Each week it seems another icon from the classical rock era or maker of the epic album has passed. The legacy of poetic lyrics, our only consolation.

As part of Charleston’s Poetry festival, Fabulon Gallery will host a show of work inspired by music because it plays such an important role for many visual artists. It’s in our soul, it moves us, and it translates into our images.

A certain song can take us to a special time or place in our own history. Maybe it’s the beats, tunes, musicians, instruments, or lyrics. Perhaps it is just one line from a song? Or the entire life of the artist. Do you have your own theme song? Do you have one song that gets you in your artistic groove?

Pay tribute to your favorite inspiration. We will accept portraits, even Elvis on velvet.

Ideally we seek poetic music that becomes inspiration for an image.

Please no copyright infringement. It is the responsibility of the artist to do the research. As a gallery we do our best to protect your copy rights; please do the same for our musical artists.

Send up to five images that reflect this theme. We will choose up to three for the exhibit and sale. Artists must send a statement connecting their work to the theme.
All work must be for sale. The gallery receives 40% of the sale. Artist is responsible for delivery and pick up of artwork. Fabulon, A Center for Art and Education, in Charleston, SC, Calls for Entries for Its Exhibit “Souvenirs of Summer”

May 10, 2017

Fabulon, A Center for Art and Education, in Charleston, SC, presents our third annual end of Summer show, “Souvenirs of Summer”.

This will be the third version of a show Fabulon hosts about the significant and symbolic transitions of Summer’s end. Each year in late August, artists regroup after vacation adventures to show recent work and commemorate the new gallery season. This year we seek deep themes of transition and the passage of time. For some it is a new beginning associated with starting school, but for others it is bittersweet evidence that children are growing up and venturing out.

Come enjoy artists’ representation of nostalgia, for things for which they long, and for things they hold most dear.

Show dates: 8/14/17-10/6/17, with an Artists’ Reception Saturday, August 26, 5-8pm. Reception is free and family friendly, with plenty of parking. Fabulon – 1017 Wappoo Rd. Charleston, SC, 29407.
