Children will have the chance to show their love of America and love of the arts on Saturday, Aug. 17, 2013, as the Market on Darlington Square, in Darlington, SC, presents a free sidewalk chalk art contest beginning at 9am with judging at noon. There also will be music, art, food, and other vendors from 9am to 1pm. Potential vendors still have time to register for a spot.

The rules are simple, and the rewards are great – a $50 cash prize to the winning artists. Register as an individual or a team in one of two categories: Ages 12 and younger or Ages 13-18. Spaces are limited, so come early to get the best spot on the north end of the Public Square.

Artwork should have a patriotic theme, and the panel of judges will choose a winner in each category based of the quality of the work and expression of the theme. Judging will begin at noon with the announcement by 12:30pm.

While the kids are working away, adults can find a variety of produce, hand-crafted items, baked goods, purses, perfumes, and other goods as artisans, craftsmen, farmers, and other vendors will be selling their wares at the Market on Darlington Square.

Everyone will enjoy Dawn Larsen and The Vicious Hillbillies as they provide musical entertainment throughout the event. Larsen grew up in the Ozarks, and the group plays Americana folk music grounded in bluegrass, mountain, and blues.

And if all that shopping gets your stomach grumbling, Darlington native Trey Calcutt will be at the market again to serve up his delicious, homemade barbecue sandwiches. Pizza Hut will have pizza by the slice, and Mama Mia’s Italian Kitchen will feature other Italian favorites. Kentucky Fried Chicken plans to have lunch to serve as well.

Children also will have the opportunity to receive much-needed back-to-school supplies thanks to State Rep. Robert Q. Williams (D-Darlington) and his wife Janice, who will be distributing free supplies during the event.

“We feel it’s important that children go to school prepared to learn and have all the tools they need to succeed in life,” says Rep. Williams.

He and his wife Janice have held their annual Back-to-School Bash at various locations in the city over the years but decided to partner with the Market on Darlington Square to reach more children as well as bring citizens downtown.

“There are many children in Darlington that would go without if we didn’t have this event every year, and we as a community have to step up to make sure they can learn and grow and succeed,” Janice says. “And they need the tools to do that.”

The event will be held from 9am to 1pm at the Public Square on Main Street in Darlington on the third Saturday of the month through September.

The market committee also invites musicians who would like to perform at a future market as well as visual artists who would like to display their work inside the courthouse lobby during the market to call 843/398-4000 ext. 103 for information or to sign up for a slot.

Vendor spaces are $25 with discounts available for nonprofit organizations. Farmers and children are allowed spaces at no charge. For details e-mail to (darlingtonplanner@gmail.com), (dvaughan48@bellsouth.net), or call 843/398-4000 ext. 103, 843/395-2310, or 843/395-0792.

Civic clubs are also encouraged to join the fun, display their good works and solicit memberships or donations by hosting a booth, as the Darlington Lions Club have done each month since the market’s inception, making new friends and selling Vidalia onions and brooms.

The open-air market is a partnership between Darlington Downtown Revitalization Association, the City of Darlington, and a dedicated group of volunteers. The monthly market began in 2011 and is set for the third Saturday of each month, April through September, for 2013.
