UNC-P Office of Diversity and Inclusion in Pembroke, NC, Offers Book Signing and Reception for New Book from Earth Women Arts – Dec. 1, 2017

November 12, 2017

Please join Earth Women Arts, Inc. for a special reception as we introduce our first “Talking Circle Book: Women of the Red Earth”. Sponsored by the UNCP Office of Diversity and Inclusion, this one day only, book launching and reception, will be held on Dec. 1, 2017, from 4:30-6:30pm, at the Entrepreneurship Incubator, 202 Main Street, Pembroke, NC, 28372. Purchase a signed copy! This book of poetry and art is filled with stories told through an Indigenous lens, from the histories that American Indians encountered and still face today.

Open its pages and become part of these experiences. With stunning images, clear writing, a resources directory, and a language glossary, “Women of the Red Earth”, is the perfect introduction to encourage group discussions or Talking Circles, based on the sacred Native American tradition of sharing circles. Use it to spark dialogue and create spaces for Native Americans and non-Native Americans to see each other in new ways.

Author Tonya Elk Locklear (Lumbee/Oglala Lakota) tells deeply evocative stories based on her family who hail from southeastern North Carolina and the Pine Ridge Reservation of South Dakota.

Artist Margie Beth Labadie (Ashkenazi-Levi) captures the emotions of these poems which speak to issues of Native American identity, Mother Earth, genocide, struggle and triumph.
