Caldwell Arts Council in Lenoir, NC, Seeks Artists for 2022 and 2023 Exhibitions – Deadline Sept. 17, 2021

The Caldwell Arts Council in Lenoir, NC, is currently accepting portfolios from local and regional artists for exhibitions in 2022 and 2023. Exhibitions run for six weeks to two months on either floor of the arts council facility.

The Caldwell Arts Council is a regional arts center that presents a variety of programs that foster cultural arts in Caldwell County. Our center is housed in an historic 100+ year old home. Two floors offer four gallery spaces that have been renovated as professional exhibit spaces. Exhibits range from contemporary to traditional and include 2-D and 3-D exhibitions.

The Caldwell Arts Council’s programs are supported by the North Carolina Arts Council, a division of the Department of Cultural Resources and by individual and corporate donors.

Gibbes Museum of Art and Society 1858 in Charleston, SC, Calls for Application From Artists For The 1858 Prize for Contemporary Southern Art – Deadline Oct. 15, 2021

The 1858 Prize for Contemporary Southern Art awards $10,000 to an artist whose work contributes to a new understanding of art in the South. Presented annually, the 1858 Prize recognizes the highest level of artistic achievement in any media. The Gibbes encourages both emerging and nationally recognized artists of all backgrounds to apply and is committed to cultivating an award that is diverse and affirming.

In addition to the monetary award, the 2021 Prize Winner will be invited to present one artwork in the Museum’s galleries during 2022 (selected in collaboration with the Curatorial Department) as well as a Visiting Artist residency opportunity in 2022 or 2023.

Artists from Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, and West Virginia are eligible to apply. The deadline is Oct. 15, 2021.

The 1858 Prize for Contemporary Southern Art is presented by Society 1858, a member auxiliary group of the Gibbes Museum of Art. This group of dynamic young professionals supports the Gibbes Museum with social and educational programs tailored for up-and-coming art patrons.

Art League of Hilton Head on Hilton Head Island, SC, Offers “Got Art?” Fundraiser – Sept. 30, 2021

At “Got Art?” every ticket is a winner! The annual Art League fundraiser will be a virtual drawing for over 100 donated works of art.

The Art League of Hilton Head’s annual fundraising benefit, “Got Art?”, makes collectors out of art enthusiasts. Every ticket holder will receive an original work of art during the live drawing via Zoom. The artworks are donated by Art League member artists, and may include paintings, drawings, photography, collage, jewelry, ceramic, and sculpture. Each is valued at $200 or more.

Each ticket costs only $100, and only 100 tickets are sold. Participants are invited to preview the 100+ works of art both in Art League Gallery and online. The preview will last three days – Sept. 28-30, 2021, from 10am-4pm – prior to the virtual Zoom drawing on Sept. 30, 6-7:30pm. During the drawing, ticket holders will choose a piece of art when their name gets called at random. You never know when your name will be called or which pieces will still be available when it’s your turn to choose.

The artwork will also be available online on our Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/ArtLeagueHiltonHead/) and our website (www.artleaguehhi.org).

All artwork may be picked up from the gallery the Friday, Saturday and Sunday, October 1, 2 and 3, following the event during our business hours Monday-Saturday 10am-4pm and Sunday 12-4pm.

Art League of Hilton Head is the only 501(c)(3) nonprofit visual arts organization on Hilton Head Island with a synergistic art gallery and teaching Academy.

Art League Academy welcomes artists and students in all media at all skill levels, even true beginners. Taught by professional art educators, students can choose from many art classes and workshops that change monthly.

Dare County Arts Council in Manteo, NC, Present The Return Of The Great Art Heist Presented by TowneBank – Oct. 1 – 29, 2021

Boast your best bid while supporting the arts at Dare County Arts Council’s fundraising auction, The Great Art Heist, which will open at the DCAC Gallery in downtown Manteo, NC, on Friday, October 1, 2021.

The Great Art Heist was created in the wake of the pandemic, and after a successful first year the auction is returning with more art to steal for 2021.

“Join us for the fun and outbid us,” said Great Art Heist Event Chairs Bea Basnight and Gail Midgett. “The Great Art Heist is our only fundraiser of 2021, so this event is vital to continuing DCAC’s programming in our community. Our goal this year is to have even more pieces of work in the auction for guests to bid on. By bidding on artwork in The Great Art Heist, you are supporting the arts and helping sustain the future of Dare County Arts Council.”

Bidding will begin at 6pm on Friday, Oct. 1, at Dare County Arts Council’s Gallery and online at (DareArts.org/artauction).

“Thank you to all of the artists who have already donated pieces to this year’s Art Heist,” said Dare County Arts Council Gallery Director Lynne Francis. “We are constantly amazed by the talent in our artistic community.”

Arts Council of York County in Rock Hill, SC, Announces Results of Their Annual Juried Competition

The Arts Council of York County presented the awards for the “32nd Annual Juried Competition” at a free, public reception at the Center for the Arts, 121 E. Main St., Rock Hill, SC, on Thursday, Aug. 19, 2021. Works accepted to the “Juried Competition” are currently on exhibition in the Dalton Gallery at the Center for the Arts through Sept. 3, 2021.

Each year, the “Annual Juried Competition” is open internationally to artists 18 and older. Only original work, created in the last two (2) years, and not previously shown in the Dalton Gallery at the Center for the Arts is accepted. All forms of media are eligible, including video.

There were 182 entries by 78 artists from 21 cities and 3 states submitted to the “32nd Annual Juried Competition”. Of those entries, Juror Amy Chalmers selected 35 works for exhibition.

Amy Chalmers is the Art Curator at the South Carolina State Museum in Columbia, SC, where she oversees the Museum’s collection of over 5,000 pieces of art related to South Carolina. She is originally from Spartanburg, SC, where she received her BA in Art History and French. Before returning to her home state, she earned her MA in Illustration: Authorial Practice from Falmouth University, taught at the Columbus College of Art & Design, and spent three years at the Billy Ireland Cartoon Library & Museum at the Ohio State University. She specializes in illustration, sequential art, and print media.

Kathy and Larry Wilson sponsor the “Juried Competition” in honor of Elizabeth Louise Dunlap Patrick. Elizabeth Louise Dunlap Patrick, a Rock Hill native, was born in Feb. 1936 in Rock Hill. Patrick was an avid supporter of the arts. She gave freely of her time and patronage to the Arts Council; served on the Gallery Committee and underwrote the awards for the annual “Juried Competition” for nearly ten years. She was a generous and ardent participant at the annual art auctions for many years, and she collected pottery from North and South Carolina potters whose work she championed. She also sponsored activities and events for the Yorkville Artist Guild. She supported her alma mater, Winthrop University, serving on alumni boards and reunion committees. Because of her generous support of the arts at Winthrop, the Elizabeth Dunlap Patrick Gallery was named in her honor in 1999. Also, Patrick was among the first group of honorees for the Medal of Honor for the Arts. Kathy Wilson continues her mother’s legacy by sponsoring the Arts Council’s Juried Awards for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd Place.
