The October 2017 Issue of “Carolina Arts” is Now Ready to Download

The October 2017 issue of Carolina Arts is up on our website at (http://www.carolinaarts.com/1017/1017carolinaarts.html) – all 71 pages of it. That’s 2 pages less than last month, but it could have been much larger if we kept including all the articles about exhibits that came in well after our deadline had passed.

This month’s cover art features a painting by contemporary Native American artists who have works on view at Western Carolina University in Cullowhee, NC. You can read about it on Page 29.

So download that PDF and dig in – it makes for good reading and shows that you have lots of opportunities to enjoy the visual arts in the Carolinas. And, don’t forget to find a way to thank our advertisers – they make this publication possible.

Cara Leepson Appointed as New Executive Director of Redux Contemporary Art Center in Charleston, SC

Following an extensive search, the Board of Directors of Redux Contemporary Art Center, in Charleston, SC, today announced that Cara Leepson has been selected to become its new Executive Director. Cara will begin on December 1. Interim Executive Director Beth Kerrigan will remain full-time at Redux through Dec. 1, 2017.

Leepson brings a wealth of experience in the not-for-profit and arts sector. She has been a successful fundraiser, team builder and is committed to serving the arts community. She currently serves as Development and Operations Manager for Transformer, a nationally respected arts organization in Washington, DC. She has also worked for other arts organizations in the nation’s capital. Leepson has a Master of Arts degree in Art and Museum Studies with an emphasis in Public Programming and Contemporary Art from Georgetown University. She holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in studio art from Lynchburg College. She worked as an intern at Redux prior to returning to the DC area for graduate school.

The search for Redux’s next Executive Director was facilitated by Governance4Good and attracted 120 applicants from across the country. Leepson was clearly the right choice to become our next Executive Director. Her incredible energy, arts management experience, and fundraising talent will be a great asset as we continue promoting contemporary art and emerging artists in the Lowcountry and beyond. She will be traveling to Charleston for our 15th Anniversary Celebration and will build on the momentum of our recent growth. Leepson commented on her appointment, “I am thrilled to be selected as Redux’s new Executive Director. I am excited to return to Charleston and begin fulfilling the mission of Redux and working toward taking the organization to the next level.”

Florence County Museum in Florence, SC, Calls for Entries for “2018 Pee Dee Regional Art Competition” – Deadline Nov. 3, 2017

The Florence County Museum in Florence, SC, is now accepting artists’ submissions for the “2018 Pee Dee Regional Art Competition”, sponsored by Chick-fil-A.

Artists wishing to enter the competition may register online using the online submission form at  (http://www.flocomuseum.org/pee-dee-regional/). Each artist may obtain a competition schedule and prospectus at (www.flocomuseum.org), or by visiting the Florence County Museum at 111 West Cheves St, Florence.

The “Pee Dee Regional” is the longest running art competition in the state of South Carolina. It has been presented annually since 1954.

Artists may submit up to four entries during online registration at a fee of $12.50 per entry. Current museum members are eligible to submit two entries without charge. Online submissions deadline is 10pm, Friday, Nov. 3, 2017.

A first place cash prize of $1000 will be awarded by corporate exhibit sponsor Chick-fil-A during the exhibition’s opening reception, Thursday evening, January 25, 2018. Both the exhibit and reception will be held at the Florence County Museum Waters Gallery, 135, South Dargan St.

Any person who is a native or resident of the following Pee Dee counties is eligible to enter: Chesterfield, Darlington, Dillon, Florence, Georgetown, Horry, Kershaw, Lee, Marion, Marlboro, Sumter, and Williamsburg.

Caldwell Arts Council Offers New Sculptures in Downtown Lenoir, NC

Have you noticed the new sculptures in the planters in downtown Lenoir?

New sculptures have been installed by Ray Giddens of Simpsonville, SC, Jim Weitzel of Forest City, NC, and Sam Steffey of Hudson, NC – with more new sculptures expected soon from Gwendolyn “Gwendy” Kerney of Lenoir City, TN, and from Desmond Lewis of Memphis, TN.

This outdoor sculpture gallery, called Tucker’s Gallery, was started by two local sculptors: Keith Willis and Suzette Bradshaw. The concept was to have an outdoor gallery for sculpture along the streets of Lenoir. They partnered with the City of Lenoir who installed planters in downtown Lenoir. Several of those planters have bases in them that allow for the rotation of sculpture.

Tucker’s Gallery gets its name from Lenoir’s history books – the Tucker family settled in the area around 1797 and their barn was likely located on what is now Norwood Street, not far from the Caldwell Arts Council. Tucker’s Barn was a voting precinct, a muster ground, a store and a place for “frolics” and celebrations. At least one large Fourth of July celebration included a drum corps, a march of Revolutionary veterans and speeches by General William Lenoir. Tucker’s Barn became a large meeting place for many gatherings and was so popular a fiddle tune was composed and written titled “Tucker’s Barn.” Doc Watson eventually recorded this tune in 1964 on an album titled, “The Watson Family Tradition.”

Hub City Empty Bowls in Spartanburg, SC, Says Soup’s On – Oct. 28, 2017

Hub City Empty Bowls will host its annual Soup Day, on Oct. 28, 2017, from 11am-4pm, at the Chapman Cultural Center, to raise money and awareness for hunger in Spartanburg, SC, where about 16 percent of the people are not sure where their next meal is coming from. Spearheaded by Carolina Clay Artists, Soup Day is a community event where citizens can make $15 donations to receive locally handmade pottery bowls and a simple meal of soup, bread, tea, and the fellowship of others who want to make Spartanburg a better place to live.

All money raised will be given to TOTAL Ministries, a local nonprofit charity that helps Spartanburg citizens in dire financial straits. Last year, 2016, Hub City Empty Bowls gave more than $33,000 to TOTAL Ministries. For every bowl taken by a patron, 83 pounds of food can be secured for those in need.

In addition to several hundred pottery bowls to choose from and about two dozen soups donated by local restaurants, patrons will be able to enjoy live music, a silent auction, and a drum circle on an autumn day.

During the summer, Hub City Empty Bowls hosted three public bowl-making events, where the general public was able to make handmade pottery bowls at no cost. All supplies, space, and instruction were donated. These were wholesome, creative, and well attended community events that welcomed everyone, even children who made some of the most endearing bowls. The hand-shaped bowls were left in at the host studios – West Main Artists Co-Op and Spartanburg Art Museum – for touch-ups, painting, and firing. In addition, several experienced and professional potters donated bowls, many of which were wheel thrown and of professional quality. All of those bowls will be available on Soup Day. Many people do their Christmas shopping at Soup Day, securing gifts that have significant social and creative meaning.

Empty Bowls is a worldwide charitable and social phenomenon without any oversight or headquarters. It was started in 1990-91 by a high school art teacher who wanted to involve his students in an art-based community project of making pottery bowls that could be used to raise money to feed the poor. From that humble beginning, the concept spread around the world, taking on many different aspects, but always keeping locally made pottery bowls as the source of the fundraising.

City of North Charleston, SC, Offers Visual Art Exhibition Opportunities – Deadline Nov. 30, 2017

Professional visual artists creating two-dimensional or wall-hung three-dimensional works are invited to apply individually or with a group to exhibit at the North Charleston City Gallery (2018-19 exhibitions). The gallery features artwork by international, national, and local artists in a variety of subjects and media. The City of North Charleston Cultural Arts Department manages the exhibitions in the space, which are rotated on a monthly basis and may feature two or more artists concurrently. Exhibits are programmed one year in advance according to fiscal year. A Review Panel will convene in December 2017 to evaluate and select exhibits for July 2018-June 2019. There is no fee to apply. Artists must apply online at (www.northcharlestonculturalartsdpartment.slideroom.com) by Monday, Nov. 30, 2017, in order to be considered.

The North Charleston City Gallery is situated in two corridors of the northwest corner of the Charleston Area Convention Center, located at 5001 Coliseum Drive in North Charleston. This high-traffic venue offers great exposure for artists seeking to reach local patrons and out-of-state visitors of the multi-use facility. Exhibits are open to the public daily and admission and parking are free. Public receptions are typically held the first Thursday of each month from 5-7pm.

Applicants must be at least 18 years old. Only original, two-dimensional works or three-dimensional pieces that can be wall mounted on the gallery’s Walker display system will be considered. Free standing sculptures, installations, and works requiring special display equipment cannot be accommodated in the space. Submission requirements include an artist statement, resume and exhibition history, exhibition concept, and five quality digital images that portray the quality and style of the artists’ work.

Artists not eligible to show their work at the City Gallery, like, for example, those creating freestanding sculptures or installations, are welcome to submit an exhibition proposal to be considered for other locations. Proposals may be e-mailed to (culturalarts@northcharleston.org) and will be reviewed by Cultural Arts on an ongoing basis.

Caldwell Arts Council in Lenoir, NC, Calls for Submissions for Annual Satie’s Holiday Sale

The Caldwell Arts Council in Lenoir, NC, is seeking artists & crafters to participate in our annual Satie’s Holiday Sale, Dec. 1-23, 2017, when the entire Arts Council is converted to a gift shop full of locally handcrafted items for holiday sales.

New items for the holiday sale will be juried by our Satie’s Holiday Committee. All items must be handmade of quality materials and construction, and the most successful items each year are those priced less than $50. We are always looking for a variety of exciting new gift items, toys, soft goods, and food items.

Please bring a few samples of your product to the Caldwell Arts Council by 5pm on one of the following dates: Oct. 3 or Oct. 31; you will be notified within a couple of days regarding acceptance.

Upstate Heritage Quilt Trail of South Carolina to Honor Lucy Harward as the 2017 UHQT Quilter of the Year in Pickens, SC – Oct. 6, 2017

The Upstate Heritage Quilt Trail of South Carolina is pleased to announce a reception to honor Lucy Harward of Pickens, SC, as the 2017 UHQT Quilter of the Year. The Quilter of the Year Program was initiated in 2010 to recognize a quilter who has provided community service and leadership through their quilting. The UHQT receives much support from the quilting community, it is our way to say thank you to artists who provide service to their community.

The public is cordially invited to the Pickens Community Center in Pickens, SC, at 10am on Friday, Oct. 6, 2017, to celebrate Harward’s many contributions to the community. There will be an exhibition of some of her quilts, in the Granger Fiber Arts Room of the Center. Refreshments will be provided in the Jack Black Room by the UHQT and the Pickens Senior Center. Three of the quilts from the trail that Harward created will be on display in the Jack Black Room. Tours of the facility and its collection of fiber arts and antique sewing items will be available.

Lucy Harward is the driving force of the Granger Fabric Arts room at the Community Center in the City of Pickens. She resides, with her husband Dale, on a beautiful farm, located halfway between Pickens and Pumpkintown. She is a life-long seamstress, completing her first dress at nine years of age, with, as she says, “a zipper down the back.” Harward began quilting approximately 30 years ago when she and Dale lived in Winter Garden, FL. She was taking classes in a shop on tailoring and dressmaking and admired the quilts displayed there. The rest is history, as they say!

Upon retirement 18 years ago, she and Dale moved back to Pickens where Harward grew up and attended her daddy’s church, Grace Methodist, went to school at Pickens Junior & Senior High, and walked down the old Doodle Trail with her friend Jane Eckman so many years ago.
Harward is also a long time member and past president of the UpCountry Quilt Guild. Her many accomplishments include fund raising and grant writing for the Pickens Community Center and the Hagood Auditorium, weekly volunteering and serving on the board of Canon Hospital, volunteer coordinator for Meals on Wheels and developing a variety of ministries and outreach throughout the county. She shares her expertise with any learners who come her way, creating a plethora of classes in the fiber arts.

As Harward states, “I help people achieve things that they would like to achieve!”
