Hillsborough Gallery of Arts in Hillsborough, NC, Opens Call-To-Artist for “Third Annual Juried Show: Resolutions 2017” – Deadline is October 26, 2016

The Hillsborough Gallery of Arts in Hillsborough, NC, will celebrate the start of the new year by again hosting its juried fine art exhibit, “Resolutions”, from January 4 to 24, 2017.  All North Carolina two-dimensional and three-dimensional fine artists are encouraged to apply. Guest juror for the awards will be Larry Wheeler, Director of the North Carolina Museum of Art in Raleigh, NC. Work will be displayed at the Hillsborough Gallery of Arts, with an opening reception on Friday, January 13, 2017, 6 – 9pm.

Original works in all fine art media are eligible. Work must have been completed within the last three years. No mass-produced prints or reproductions will be accepted. Hand-pulled prints, original digital prints and photographs are acceptable. All artwork must be the exhibitor’s original idea and be created independently by the exhibitor. Artists must be at least 18 years old and live in North Carolina. All accepted artwork must be hand delivered to HGA on January 2 or 3, 2017.

The Call-To-Artists will be open August 26, through October 26, 2016.

Dr. Wheeler is the Director of the North Carolina Museum of art in Raleigh. Under his visionary leadership, the museum has vastly increased in size and stature and substantially expanded its collection, especially in the fields of modern and contemporary art

The Hillsborough Gallery of Arts is owned and operated by its members, established local artists whose artwork includes oil, acrylic and watercolor painting, encaustic, sculpture, ceramics, photography, fiber art, jewelry, glass, metal, enamels, and wood.  We strive to create an atmosphere of cooperation and mutual encouragement and to give the arts a more visible presence in the town of Hillsborough.  Openings for new members arise when current members leave the gallery. Artists interested in being notified when an opening occurs should fill out a waiting list form, available on the HGA website.

Orange County Public Library in Hillsborough, NC, Calls for Entries for Juried Art Exhibit – Deadline Mar. 25, 2015

The Orange County Public Library’s Main Branch in Hillsborough, NC, invites artists who live or have an art studio in Orange, Alamance, Caswell, Person, Chatham, Durham or Wake counties to participate in the Library’s Juried Art Exhibit, this summer.

The exhibit will run from May 15 – August 1, 2015. Applications must be submitted by Wednesday, Mar. 25, 2015. Details and submission instructions are online at (http://www.orangecountync.gov/library/CallForArtEntries.asp).

“This is the fourth time we have invited community artists to participate in a juried exhibition,” said Andrea Tullos, assistant library director. “The library exists for the public’s enjoyment and education. Displaying art on our walls is an excellent way to support our community’s enjoyment and to share the world of art with them.”

The Orange County Public Library’s Main Branch is located at 137 W. Margaret Lane in downtown Hillsborough. Free parking is available in the parking deck and along the streets.

The Fifth Hillsborough, NC, Handmade Parade Takes Place – Oct. 19, 2014

Residents young and old with fantastic, locally created art will march down Churton Street through Historic Hillsborough, NC, as stilt walkers, giant puppets and drummers, Sunday Oct 19, 2014, beginning at 2:30pm, at this year’s  bi-annual Handmade Parade.

The Hillsborough Handmade Parade is a grass roots community participation celebration sponsored and organized by the volunteers of the Hillsborough Arts Council. The parade starts at 2:30pm on the corner of East Margaret  Lane and Churton Street. It will end with a grand Finale at the Burwell School lawn. The Hillsborough Arts Council has spent several months holding workshops for anyone wanting to parade their creations down the main street of town. There will also be dancing and drumming from the Magic of African Rhythms Troupe , The Durham Bull Struters and many more. The theme of this year’s event is “Is Flight on the Eno” paying tribute to the river that runs through town.

The Orange County Historical Society in Hillsborough, NC, Will Present “Let’s Talk – NC Pottery” with Pottery Collector Dr. A Everette James – July 19, 2013

The Orange County Historical Society in Hillsborough, NC, will present “Let’s Talk – NC Pottery” with Dr. A Everette James, renowned pottery expert, collector, and author, on Friday, July 19, 2013, beginning at 7pm at Leland Little Auction Gallery, located a 620 Cornerstone Court in Hillsborough.

Bring your own unidentified piece of NC pottery and see what Dr. James and others present have to say about its origin at the “Pottery Road Show”. There will also be a silent auction featuring pottery by local artisans and refreshments. All proceeds benefit the Orange County Historical Museum.

Dr. James is the author of “North Carolina Art Pottery, 1900 – 1960”. The history of pottery as utilitarian ware is well documented. About 1900, the more toward art pottery began in North Carolina. Dr. Everette James of Chapel Hill, NC, has now documented that transition in a book. With over 900 color illustration and detailed legends, “North Carolina Art Pottery, 1900 – 1960,” is not only a must for serious collectors, it is a beautiful coffee table book for any pottery lover.
