The April 2018 Issue of “Carolina Arts” is Now Ready to Download

The April 2018 issue of Carolina Arts is up on our website at (http://www.carolinaarts.com/418/418carolinaarts.html) – all 65 pages of it.

This month’s cover art features works by Bob Trotman, from the exhibit, Bob Trotman: Business as Usual, on view at the Gregg Museum of Art, at NC State University, in Raleigh, NC, on view through July 8, 2018. We had such a hard time selecting works for the cover that we created a back cover this month on Page 65. And, we also re-ran the article about this exhibit which we offered in February of this year. If you’re enthralled with Trotman’s works as I am you might want to visit (http://www.bobtrotman.com/videos) where you’ll find some creepy videos and a couple that show closer looks of the artist and his work process.

59th annual Art on Main Fine Art / Fine Craft Festival in Hendersonville, NC, Call for Artists Deadline May 1, 2018

Artist applications are available for the 59th annual Art on Main fine art and fine craft festival in downtown Hendersonville, NC. Festival dates will be Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 29 and 30, 2018, from 10am to 5pm each day. This juried and judged show is produced by the Arts Council of Henderson County.

The Art on Main Committee is announcing that this year’s show will be set up on Main Street for a second year. The committee has been working with the city to move the show into the street for several years. This allows for a show with a more connected layout, storage space behind booths, and a safer environment for everyone.

Artists may download an application from the Arts Council’s website, (www.acofhc.org). An application can also be requested by e-mailing the Arts Council at (acofhc@bellsouth.net), or by calling 828/693-8504. Artists must send four images of their work plus a photo of their booth along with their applications.

The deadline for applications is May 1, 2018 (postmark).

$3,000 in cash prizes will be awarded. Breakfasts, booth sitters, and a complimentary accommodations program, which provides housing for travelling artists in the homes of members of the Arts Council community, are also offered.

The Arts Council has an aggressive marketing campaign planned to draw audiences from Henderson County, plus North Carolina, and surrounding states. Residents and tourists alike enthusiastically look forward to this popular annual outdoor festival.

2018 Red Rose Festival Photography Contest in Lancaster, SC, Call to Artists – Deadline April 20, 2018

Red Rose Festival Photography Contest & Exhibition is a collaborative partnership between the City of Lancaster, SC, Katawba Valley Land Trust (KVLT) and the Lancaster County Council of the Arts and will take part with the annual Red Rose Festival on May 18/19, 2018, in downtown Lancaster. Open to all ages, participants are asked to submit one 8×10 color or black/white photograph, focusing on the beauty and breathtaking views of nature in Lancaster County​.​ There is no entry fee. This is a juried competition and there are cash awards: $150 for first place, $100 for second and $50 for third. In addition, an Honorable Mention photograph is named. Exhibition will be on display in the Springs House galleries during May.

Asheville Fine Art Show Calls for Entries for Its “Youth Art Competition” – Deadline May 1, 2018

Nationally-renowned art show organizer Hot Works, LLC is inviting aspiring young artists ages 5 through 13 (grades K-8) to participate in the “Youth Art Competition” it is holding in conjunction with the Asheville Fine Art Show on May 19 & 20, 2018. The deadline for submissions is May 1, 2018.

Hot Works has a long history of promoting art education in connection with its fine art shows. One way in which it seeks to accomplish this goal is by inviting local youngsters to compete in an adjunct youth art competition for grades K-8 or ages 5-13. Sponsored by the Institute for the Arts & Education, Inc. (the 501(c)(3) non-profit organization which is part of the art fair), the competition gives budding young artists a golden opportunity to begin learning the rules of being part of a professional art show and exhibition. As a bonus, competitors are provided with prime space within the show to display their entries, and $250 in cash awards for the winners.

The Asheville Fine Art Show features work by up to 125 fine art and craft artists who have been juried into the two-day event by a panel of professionals in evaluating and judging artwork of all kinds and descriptions. The exhibiting professionals are on sight throughout the show, and students participating in the competition are afforded the opportunity to speak with them and ask questions about their process, inspiration and what it is like to participate in art festivals and fairs as a career.

“In these ways, our youth art competition provides students with an unmatched learning experience,” states Art Show Director Patty Narozny. Criteria for judging the youth competition is the same as that employed to judge the work of the show’s professional artists: technique/execution and originality.

The Asheville Fine Art Show brings to Asheville and surrounding communities new original paintings, drawings, pastels, photography, ceramics, clay, glass, sculpture, wood working and carvings, fiber art and art jewelry from the ateliers, studios and workshops of some 125 local and internationally-acclaimed artists. Craven Arts Council in New Bern, NC, Calls for Artworks Inspired by Poetry – Deadline May 3, 2018

The Craven Arts Council & Gallery is pleased to announce their call for artists for the 2018 “Fusion Poetry: Art” Exhibition at Bank of the Arts in New Bern, NC, held from May 4 – June 29, 2018. The Arts Council is seeking artwork inspired by poetry.

During the fall and winter of 2017 Craven Arts Council asked local poets to submit their poetry to be used as inspiration for visual art. Over two hundred poems were submitted, including both adult and youth categories. Craven Arts Council has complied the poems and posted them online so that artists can search through them and find inspiration for an original piece of art.

Artist are asked to visit (www.CravenArts.org) and look under the “Exhibits” tab for “Poetry: Art.” There they will find the full terms and conditions for the exhibition and a link to all submitted poetry. Each artist may submit one original artwork. Work will be dropped off and juried May 2nd and 3rd, 2018. Some work may be rejected due to space considerations. Artist receptions for the event will be held during the downtown New Bern Artwalks, May 11th and June 8th, from 5pm-8pm. Non cash prizes will be awarded for poetry, art, and the best fusion of the two. Craven Arts will also feature a youth division for the contest in the Director’s Gallery.

Artspace in Raleigh, NC, Holds Opens Call for Entries for “FRESH” Exhibition – Deadline May 12, 2018

Artspace in Raleigh, NC, seeks submissions for “FRESH”, an exhibition of new works by North Carolina artists. The exhibition demystifies the process about what goes into the making of a juried exhibition by exhibiting all submitted works prior to the final juried exhibition. NC artists 18 + working in any media are encouraged to submit work produced in the last two years to this unique exhibition. Submissions are limited in size to a maximum of 36” wide and 72” high. Hickory, NC’s Oktoberfest Calls for Artists to Enter Oktoberfest Juried Arts and Crafts – Deadline August 1, 2018

Hickory, NC’s Oktoberfest 2018 is now accepting applications for Arts and Crafts vendors. Celebrating its 33rd year, this annual festival will be held October 12, 13, and 14, 2018 in Downtown Hickory NC. Estimated attendance is 100,000 for the three day event.

Hickory’s Oktoberfest is an outdoor festival held annually on the second weekend in October. It features four stages of non-stop live entertainment ranging from traditional polka to rock & roll, two beer gardens, amusement rides and carnival games, a juried arts and crafts show, and hundreds of food and commercial vendors.

Oktoberfest’s Juried Arts and Crafts show is a juried event, with prizes given for the top three artisans. The Arts & Crafts area includes paintings, sculpture, pottery, handmade swings, candles, jewelry, photography and more. Booth spaces are 10 x 10 and limited to one craftsperson per booth. Registration will be accepted until August 1, 2018. Booth fees are $200.00 for all three days with electricity available for an additional $25.00. Haywood County Arts Council in Waynesville, NC, Calls For Art Works for Two Exhibits

The Haywood County Arts Council in Waynesville, NC, extends a call to all clay artists to participate in an upcoming May 2018 exhibit showcasing handcrafted clay mugs and creations in oil. Please submit a complete application, as well as an image of the work you plan to submit, and a paragraph explanation of that work. A Call to Artists—Freedom: An Artist’s Point of View
The Haywood County Arts Council and local non-profit, REACH, are co-sponsoring the June Exhibit. REACH serves survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault, elder abuse and teen dating violence. They not only operate a 24-hour helpline and emergency shelter, but also provide victim advocacy, legal assistance, counseling referrals, and community education. We ask that interested artists select one piece to donate for this show – we are seeking variety and wide participation. Work themed around freedom and the arts are encouraged. All mediums are welcome for this exhibit. Please submit a complete application, as well as an image of the work you plan to donate OR a digital sample of the donated work and a one-paragraph artist’s bio. McMaster Gallery, located at 1615 Senate Street in Columbia, SC, will hold the 63rd Annual Art Auction, on Wednesday, Mar. 28, 2018, from 6-9pm.

The 63rd Annual Art Auction will include original artworks of a variety of mediums including: sculpture, printmaking, photography, drawing, painting and ceramics made by faculty, current students, and alumni of the University of South Carolina’s School of Visual Art and Design and artists within the community including (but not limited to).

The artwork will be on display for public viewing starting at 1pm on Mar. 28. Anyone who cannot attend the Art Auction event can fill out an Absentee Form to participate. There will be a Preview Party at 6pm followed by the Live Auction at 6:30pm. The Silent Auction will be open at 6pm and close about 30 minutes after the Live Auction ends.

The auction is sponsored by the School of Visual Art and Design in the university’s College of Arts and Sciences. Proceeds from the auctioned works are divided between the artists and the university’s art scholarship and gallery fund. Credit cards (excluding Discover) and checks will be accepted.

This popular event will be held at McMaster Gallery located in the University of South Carolina’s School of Visual Art and Design at 1615 Senate Street, Columbia, SC, with accessible street parking on Pickens, Senate, and Henderson.
