Categories:
Heroes – Help us showcase your heroes and heroines in South Carolina. Is it a teacher, a first responder, a nurse, a family member, or a do-good stranger turned superhero? Share with us the unseen and seen heroes in your life so we can celebrate and behold these Carolina champions.

Dirty Jobs – Weak-stomach, hypersensitive to particular smells, or can’t take the heat? This photography assignment might not be your ‘cup of tea.’ We are interested in exploring South Carolina’s dirty jobs. Whether that means recording extremes in manufacturing or examining skull removal in taxidermy, we want to see the dirty jobs of South Carolina’s economic engine displayed on our walls. This is an open invitation to all who wish to help us catalog unsavory, demanding, or vexatious work.

Local Watering Holes – Who remembers watching Mutual of Omaha’s Wild Kingdom, where the zebras went to quench their thirst at the watering hole before the lions attacked? Luckily, human watering holes tend to be safer havens in our local communities. Pubs, dives, and bars became favored watering holes to drink socially, enjoy conversation and foster companionship. Show us your local watering holes and display people and activities that spur a sense of belonging.

Newfound Hobbies – A recent survey discovered that 6 in 10 Americans adopted a new hobby as Covid-19 turned our world topsy-turvy in 2020. The effects of this sweeping viral outbreak resulted in the adoption of activities to combat social, economic, and political uncertainties. Newfound hobbies (cooking, gardening, meditation, reading, photography, DIY projects, coding, etc.) served as self-medication mental health cures for lengthy lockdowns; we would like to explore this phenomenon. This is an open invitation to participate in our photographic journey of recording newly discovered hobbies during the pandemic and post-pandemic. Whether you are a professional photographer, fresh hobbyist, or digital photos hoarder, please share with us photos displaying how you or your subjects have wrestled, resisted, and effectively boycotted the pandemic with newfound hobbies.

**Images created via any form of photography will be accepted (i.e. shot on film, shot digitally, shot with cell phones, unaltered shots, digital manipulations, alternative processes, mixed media, montages, photograms, etc.), so long as part of the image is photographically created. Amateur and professional photographers of all ages are invited to enter at this link (https://blackcreekarts.org/all-events/carolinas-annual-photography-competition-g5pm9).

Coker College in Hartsville, SC, Offers BFA Degree in Studio Art

November 6, 2018

Coker College in Hartsville, SC, recently added a new degree option, a bachelor of fine arts (BFA) in studio art. This new, more intensive degree joins Coker’s existing offerings, which include a bachelor of arts (BA) degree in art with concentrations in art education, fine arts, graphic design, and photography.

Coker’s BFA in studio art will prepare students for a professional, studio-based career in a variety of media, such as painting, sculpture, graphic design, web design, photography, and mixed media. The most significant difference between a BA degree in art and a BFA in studio art is in the nature of the curriculum, with BA students focusing more in the liberal arts with general studies courses such as English, history, math and science. Viewed as a professional degree, a BFA in studio art will focus on a more specific and intensive art-focused curriculum.

“This program offers the rigorous studio practice many art students crave,” says Nate Gulledge, chair of the art department at Coker College. “I’m also excited to see how the BFA will strengthen the entire art department.”

While a BA in art does not require a portfolio review as part of the application process, candidates for the BFA in studio art will need to submit several examples of their work prior to acceptance into the program.

For more information about Coker College’s BFA in studio art, please visit (www.coker.edu/BFA-studio-art).

Coker College also offers a bachelor of arts degree in art with concentrations in art education, fine arts, graphic design, and photography. For more information, please visit (www.coker.edu/art).

Current Coker students interested in pursuing a BFA in Studio Art should contact Professor Nate Gulledge by e-mail at (ngulledge@coker.edu).

Student Art Shows Taking Place in the Pee Dee of SC – Not Forgotten

April 5, 2016

As usual, and I don’t know why, but who ever is in charge of publicity – students or staff – at these universities and colleges in the Pee Dee region of SC, we never seem to receive this info about year-ending student exhibits before our deadline goes by.

Students – we’re not forgetting about you at Carolina Arts. And, for most of you it may be the last time you’re mentioned in our operations – even if you are mentioned. Coker College didn’t even include names for students who would have work presented in their Senior show and in this case it may have been their own fault, but the buck stops with their instructors.

The Coker College Art Program in Hartsville, SC, has been granted Associate Membership by the National Association of Schools of Art and Design (NASAD)

June 17, 2015

cokercollegelogo

“NASAD accreditation is an affirmation of both the quality of the program and the commitment of its faculty,” said Provost Tracy Parkinson. “In particular, the efforts and leadership of the program chair, Professor Jean Grosser, are at the heart of this outcome.”

According to NASAD, accreditation involves an evaluation that determines if an institution or specific program achieves educational objectives and meets established standards. Reviews focus on education quality, institutional integrity and educational improvements. Associate membership is granted based on a program’s ability to meet curricular standards as well as a substantial portion of all other standards of the association.

“National accreditation is a great achievement for the Coker College art program,” said Jean Grosser. “This milestone is a result of the collaborative efforts of the art faculty to create a top-notch program that provides opportunities for our students to excel.”

NASAD is an association of approximately 323 schools of art and design, primarily at the collegiate level, but also including postsecondary non-degree-granting schools for the visual arts disciplines. NASAD is the national accrediting agency for art and design-related disciplines. The association also provides information to the public. It produces statistical research, provides development for leaders of art and design schools and engages in policy analysis. For more information about NASAD, go to (http://nasad.arts-accredit.org).

The mission of Coker’s art department is to teach students to think analytically and use art to express their ideas and demonstrate competencies in their major concentration. Students learn to communicate visually, orally and in writing. This mission is an essential component of the liberal arts. Students meld ideas from diverse areas of academe with their search for personal expression in their art production. Students who are engaged in art making as an extension of their total development are prepared for graduate study and multiple careers in the arts.
