701 Center for Contemporary Art in Columbia, SC, Calls for Proposals for Site-Specific Works for Mill District Public Art Trail in Columbia – Deadline March 9, 2022

February 9, 2022

701 Center for Contemporary Art (CCA) in Columbia, SC, is seeking artists to develop and execute site-specific works for five gate houses located on the grounds of the historic Granby and Olympia Mills as part of CCA’s Mill District Public Art Trail. The mills are twin Romanesque Revival style, four-story structures designed by W.B. Smith Whaley & Company – the leading mill architects of their time. Once considered two of the most architecturally significant textile mills in South Carolina, today the two massive buildings have been repurposed for residential mill living.

The application deadline is Wednesday, March 9, 2022.

Budget
The budget for each gate house is $3,000

Public Art Opportunities
Five gate houses located in front of the two mill buildings offer unique opportunities for site-specific works. The structures were built during WWII. Designed to compliment the architectural elements of the mill buildings, the Olympia Mill gate houses feature arch-shaped windows and a frieze consisting of terracotta arches. The less decorated Granby Mill gate houses feature dentil brick molding and sash windows.

The gate houses will function as changing exhibition spaces for temporary public art projects. The projects will be installed for a minimum of one year. Each gate house is 10’x10’ with a modest interior and lighting. Access to the interior is through doors on the rear or side of each structure. The gate houses are not air-conditioned or heated. Artwork must be able to withstand extreme weather conditions.

The exteriors of the gate houses are protected under the City of Columbia historic preservation ordinance. Attachments to the exterior are not allowed.

Eligibility
Artists working in media appropriate for non-conditioned environments and styles are eligible for consideration. Artists may submit individually or as a team. Artist teams must designate one artist as the lead contact. This opportunity is open to professional artists 18 and over.

Selection Process
A panel of arts professionals will review artists qualifications and make a selection of artists who will be invited to submit a full proposal. Selections will be based on artistic merit, experience with public art commissions and/or installation art and the ability to complete and install the project by June 20, 2022.

RFQ Requirements
Images of up to five completed commissions/installations that demonstrate your qualifications for the project. Please include the title, medium, dimensions, year completed, location, and a short description.

Artist resume demonstrating a minimum of five years of professional visual art experience. If submitting as a team, a current resume should be submitted for each team member. Please compile resumes into one document.

Statement of interest in this particular Mill District opportunity

References that include the names and current contact information for three individuals with whom you have worked, collaborated, or who have commissioned your work in the past. References may be contacted for artists invited to develop a proposal for the commissions.

Z. Smith Reynolds Foundation in Winston-Salem, NC, Accepting Letters of Intent for Second Cohort of Inclusive Public Art Initiative – Deadline is March 25, 2022

February 7, 2022

The Z. Smith Reynolds Foundation (ZSR) in Winston-Salem, NC, announced today that it is accepting Letters of Intent for a second cohort of Inclusive Public Art projects across the state. To access information about the Letter of Intent process, visit ZSR’s website at (https://www.zsr.org/inclusive-public-art).

Letters of Intent due on March 25, 2022 at 12:00pm (noon).

ZSR’s investment in inclusive public art is intended to share stories of diversity, equality, inclusion and equity as they relate to the people and places of North Carolina, especially those whose stories are often untold or under told. After an impactful inaugural cohort of Inclusive Public Art grantees, ZSR knows that this effort can catalyze community conversations that result in a shared and fuller understanding of our common history — and common bonds — as North Carolinians.

ZSR recently announced a $2 million partnership with The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation – the largest supporter of arts and humanities in the US – to expand and continue its Inclusive Public Art initiative across North Carolina. The partnership, which includes $1 million from both ZSR and the Mellon Foundation, will support commemorative and artist commissions specifically focused on underrepresented narratives and communities.

Grant amounts for the second cohort will be flexible, with an anticipated range from $50,000 to $200,000+, allowing for projects that encompass grassroots visual storytelling to large-scale, iconic public artworks. Applicants are encouraged to think boldly about the artistic possibilities for memorializing stories that uplift diverse narratives of who we are as North Carolinians. Grant funds should be used for community engagement, documentation, art creation and installation.

“Public art plays an important role in telling community and statewide stories,” said ZSR Executive Director Maurice “Mo” Green. “For far too long, people of color and women, in particular, have been left out of the public art narrative. Our hope is that these powerful stories will inspire more communities to embrace the multitude of people and perspectives that have shaped North Carolina.”

Because this initiative is intended to spark healthy dialogue, the community engagement aspect of these grants is just as important as the art installations themselves. Therefore, ZSR is looking for communities that will authentically involve a cross-section of people, groups and organizations in telling, discussing and perhaps even producing the story(ies) depicted in the art.

The deadline to submit a Letter of Intent for ZSR’s Inclusive Public Art initiative is March 25, 2022 at 12:00pm (noon). In May 2022, ZSR will select semifinalists who will receive a $5,000 planning grant and an invitation to submit a full application by early 2023.

ZSR will hold a webinar for interested applicants on Wednesday, February 23 at 1pm. Click (https://us06web.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZArcOqurTstGdKWL1qR6iRQyhTM-PtdKo-G) to register for the webinar. The webinar will be recorded and posted to ZSR’s website.

Dare County Arts Council in Manteo, NC, Announces “44th Annual Frank Stick Memorial Art Show” Award Recipients

February 7, 2022

The “44th Annual Frank Stick Memorial Art Show” opened at Dare County Arts Council’s Gallery in downtown Manteo, NC, on Saturday, January 29, 2022.

Artist James Melvin carefully selected the following award recipients:

Eure Best In Show: Taylor Williams “Prevail” (oil)

Excellence Awards: Holly Nettles “Renewal” (oil), Michael Halminski “Farm Truck” (photography), Mike Rowe “My Octopus Friend” (recycled resin), and Fay Davis Edwards “A Day’s Work” (mixed media encaustic)

Honorable Mentions: Bob McCormick “Manteo” (photography), Jennings Mitchell “The Baiting” (photography), and John Bliven “Just Hold On” (photography)

“This show is an excellent body of work with so much diversity,” said judge James Melvin. “I selected Taylor Williams’ painting as the Best In Show piece because it encompasses what you look for in a great painting- composition, color and movement. It is super realistic, you can almost hear the waves crashing.”

This year’s Frank Stick Show features 105 entries from local and regional artists.

“I am extremely honored to have received Best In Show in the Frank Stick Show,” said artist Taylor Williams. “I know that it must have been a hard decision with all of the talented artists who submitted work. This piece was really special to me because I had the reference photo set aside for a long time before I painted it. When I finally decided to take on the challenge, I gave myself no time limit and included as many details as I could. I really enjoyed my time creating this piece, and I’m so grateful for the recognition.”

Due to the recent surge in COVID-19 cases, the opening reception was postponed. In place of the opening reception, Dare County Arts Council will be hosting two evening viewings of the Frank Stick Memorial Art Show on Friday, February 18 and Thursday, February 24 from 5pm-7pm where people can come see the exhibit outside of regular gallery hours.

People who visit the exhibit can vote by ballot for the People’s Choice Award, which will be tallied at the end of the show. The People’s Choice award recipient will be announced on Dare County Arts Council’s website and social media.

The show will remain on display at the DCAC Gallery through Friday, February 25, 2022. The Gallery is open Tuesday-Friday 10am-5pm and Saturday 10am-4pm.

The Frank Stick Memorial Art Show is the longest running visual arts exhibit in Dare County, and is held in memory of Outer Banks preservationist and artist Frank Stick. A special thank you to Jane Webster, Beverly Perdue, Muse Originals OBX, Michael Halminski Photography, and KDH Cooperative Gallery & Studios for sponsoring the “44th Annual Frank Stick Memorial Art Show”.
